Volney Douglas, Blanche Audrey Lawson Douglas' grandson, remembers her for an unusual
combination of refinement and practical ability: she insisted on good manners, could ride a
horse, and could string barbed wire. At home, children ate in the kitchen or dining room to
protect the living-room carpet. He remembers her as fair and generous. Her later travels reached
Antarctica, from which she sent postcards and stuffed penguins to the family. These are his
recollections, recorded in July 2026.
Photo of Blanche with daughter Jan Karen, about 1947, (photographer unknown), is from the family collection; Volney
Douglas, her grandson, provided it and the bio information.
