Grace Ramona Jacobs Lowe was named after the new community in which she was born, Ramona, California. As a young woman, she was a mildwife in mining communities in Arizona. She married Alonzo Theodore 'Lon' Lowe in 1916 in Tucson, Arizona. After her sister Maude Jacobs Douglas was killed in 1919 in Searchlight, Nevada, Grace and Lon and their young children took on the care of Maude's children, eventually moving from Yuma, Arizona to Elgin to be near the Douglas children's extended family.
